About this template

Feature requests arrive as solutions, and building exactly what was asked for is how products get bloated. The help text on the problem field asks explicitly for the situation rather than the feature, because the situation is what you can design against and often has a better answer than the one requested.

Asking how the person handles it today is the highest value question here. An expensive workaround proves the problem is real, and no workaround at all usually means the need is theoretical, and that distinction sorts a backlog faster than any voting system.

The importance scale tops out at I would switch tools for it, which gives you a usable signal about retention risk rather than a general enthusiasm score. Keep the plan field hidden so you can weight requests, and collect the email so you can close the loop when something ships.

Templates are a starting point, not legal or professional advice. Where a form carries consent, medical, or contractual wording, have somebody qualified review it against the rules that apply to you before you publish.

Frequently asked questions

What should a feature request form ask?
What they want, the problem behind it, how they handle it today, which part of the product, and how much it matters. The problem is more useful than the proposed solution.
Why ask for the problem rather than the feature?
Because the requested feature is one person's guess at a fix. Collecting the problem lets you see when twenty requests are the same need wearing different clothes.
How do I prioritise what comes in?
Sort on the impact and frequency fields rather than counting requests. A small number of people badly blocked usually beats a large number mildly inconvenienced.
